The Metro City Beat concept originated in Houston in 1974.  Two well-respected local journalists, Kent Demaret and Garvin Berry, were hosts of “City Beat”, a weekly television program on the local PBS TV station.

According to a press release at the time – “City Beat is designed to cover the activities of the people and events that control the direction of the city of Houston.”

“The reason City Beat concerns you is it’s all about city government.  It’s about priorities, politics, personalities and money.  Your money.  It’s about the people you have chosen to be your elected officials; what they do, why, and how it affects you.  Or don’t do.  And why not.”

“City Beat is detached from all “political considerations”.  It doesn’t “take sides” – with one exception: it is on the side of all citizens who want more information, specific and general, about governmental actions.”

I believe that many citizens in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex desire to have more information about the activities of local government  entities.  In this age of new technologies, we hope to be a source for news  and information  in the same spirit and with the same resolve that empowered Kent and Garvin over 30 years ago.
